The AI Policy Lab is a new interdisciplinary research environment at Umeå University, hosted by the Department of Computing Science, under the leadership of Wallenberg Academy Fellow and Director Virginia Dignum. The AI Policy Lab aims to facilitate cross-faculty and cross-discipline interaction both within and outside Umeå University while at the same time giving access to a wide international network. The AI Policy Lab will serve as a hub in a shared space for researchers during internal sabbaticals or micro projects, while they remain at their home department part-time. This first call for fellowship grants for researchers at Umeå University will make an important contribution in the building of an equally buzzing and excellent research environment at the AI Policy Lab. The deadline to apply is 8 May 2024 at 17:00CET.

What are the AI Policy Lab Fellowships? 

The AI Policy Lab Fellowships gives researchers at Umeå University the opportunity to get dedicated time to address urgent research questions within the emerging research field of AI Policy. The research projects are expected to have a high interdisciplinary and societal relevance. The research projects are furthermore expected to be conducted at the AI Policy Lab and all selected fellows are required to spend time at the lab equivalent to the duration of the time of the fellowship. All fellows will be featured on the website of AI Policy Lab. 

Proposals can address any aspect of AI policy. Preference will be given to proposals with a strong multidisciplinary component.

Who is eligible to apply? 

Researchers at all faculties, employed by Umeå university, are eligible to apply. Researchers with temporary contracts, including PhD students and postdocs are not eligible to apply. 

How much and what costs does the fellowship cover? 

The maximum grant is 50% of salary costs for 6 months. Applications can be made for research time and expenses necessary for the execution of the research project such i.e. publication costs and other expenses related to the AI Policy Fellowship to a maximum of 30 000 SEK. Individual buy-out time will need to be negotiated with your home department. The administration of the grant is expected to be handled through the department where you are employed. 

What are the evaluation criteria? 

  • Quality and excellence of idea 

Your proposal should clearly outline a hypothesis or research question and method that takes an interdisciplinary or cross-sectorial approach. Tell us what you want to find out from doing this project and why it is an important and relevant knowledge advancement for the AI Policy field. 

  • Contribution to the AI Policy Lab 

All selected fellows are expected to actively contribute to the research activities, such as seminars and workshops, at the AI Policy Lab, as well as in the lab’s collaboration with external stakeholders. 

  • Secondary criteria: Synergy between projects / Composition of group 

In the review process attention will also be paid to the potential synergies between the selected research projects and that the fellows together form a group that reflects the AI Policy Lab’s commitment to interdisciplinary interaction.

Who will evaluate my application? 

A review group composed of researchers from all faculties at Umeå University with interdisciplinary competence will review your application. 

When are fellows expected to start at the AI Policy Lab? 

The selected fellows will be announced on 5 June. The fellowship period at the AI Policy Lab then runs from August 2024 to February 2025.
