The AI Policy Lab invites bachelor and master level students to contribute to our mission. Join us to engage in vital research focused on developing policies for AI and understanding AI’s impact on existing policy frameworks, and develop informed strategies to responsibly integrate artificial intelligence into society.

AI Systems to Promote Equitable Access and Reduce Social Inequalities

Research Objective: To investigate and develop strategies for designing AI systems that promote equitable access and prevent the exacerbation of social inequalities. The internship will focus on creating guidelines and frameworks that ensure AI technologies are accessible and beneficial to diverse socioeconomic groups.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Creation of a comprehensive set of design principles for inclusive AI, focusing on accessibility features and user interface adaptations.
  • Policy proposals aimed at ensuring equitable access to AI resources and training programs, particularly targeting underserved communities.
  • Case studies or pilot projects implementing these strategies in real-world settings, with analysis of their impact on reducing social inequalities.

Tools for Assessment and Monitoring of Responsible AI Guidelines and Regulations

Research Objective: To explore the development of tools and a visualization dashboard for responsible AI governance, focusing on their design, implementation, and effectiveness in promoting compliance and transparency.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Examine available tools for assessing and monitoring compliance with responsible AI guidelines and regulations and evaluate how well each tool measures adherence to responsible AI principles and regulations.
  • Develop a prototype assessment and monitoring tool for responsible AI governance.
  • Create and implement a visualization dashboard for presenting AI governance data.
  • Evaluate the developed tool and the visualization dashboard to understand their impact on compliance and transparency.

Addressing environmental impacts of AI

Research Objective: Identify socio-technical approaches and tools to assess the environmental footprint of current AI technologies, focusing on their computational requirements and data processing. This study aims to propose innovative methods to measure and reduce environmental footprint associated with AI systems.

Expected Outcomes:

  • A detailed analysis of the energy consumption patterns of large-scale AI systems.
  • Identification of alternative energy-efficient algorithms and architectures that reduce the environmental impact without compromising computational performance.
  • Policy recommendations for sustainable practices in AI development and deployment, including guidelines for energy usage reporting and carbon offsetting.

Analysis and Harmonization of Current Governance Initiatives for AI Technologies

Research Objective: To analyze existing governance initiatives related to AI technologies across various sectors and geographic regions, with the goal of identifying commonalities and differences. The internship will focus on proposing ways to harmonize these initiatives to ensure a coherent global framework for ethical, transparent, and safe AI deployment.

Expected Outcomes:

  • A comprehensive review of current governance models in use worldwide, categorizing them according to their approaches, effectiveness, and sectoral applications.
  • Identification of best practices and gaps in current governance initiatives that could benefit from international harmonization.
  • Recommendations for a unified governance framework that aligns diverse regional and sector-specific policies, enhancing global cooperation and standardization in AI oversight.

We are looking for students with a strong interest in responsible AI, who are eager to learn how to address AI’s legal, societal, and ethical implications. But most importantly, we are looking for students who are prepared to shoot for big thing and are keen to have an impact.

Remote internships can be considered for exceptional applicants.

Required education/skills:
  • Bachelor or Master student Computer Science, AI, Philosophy, Political Sciences, STS, Law or equivalent
  • Familiarity with current AI governance and policy initiatives is a pre
  • Strong interest in artificial intelligence, societal questions and Responsible AI
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and adapt to a fast-paced work environment.
